Today's post feature some journaling, juggling, and painting! Home Learning - Day 16
"You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
- Winnie the Pooh/A.A. Milne
Hey friends! Thanks for checking out my post filled with ideas for your kids today. On Tuesday our local hero, Dr. Bonnie Henry, announced the lowest number of confirmed COVID - 19 cases in BC in three weeks! It is such great news. Hopefully you feel inspired to be even more diligent with social distancing and spending time at home. It is hard to be away from family and friends, but being strong now helps more of us be able to be together later. Stay strong and stay home. :-)
On that note, here are some fun things for your kids (or maybe even parents) to do at home!
Activity #1 - Make Breakfast
Today is a great day for a yogurt parfait!
Ingredients:
- yogurt
- fruit of your choice
- granola
- bowl
- spoon
Instructions:
1. Get out a bowl and put your yogurt into the bowl.
2. Add your fruit on top. If your fruit is from the freezer, thaw it in the microwave before putting it on your yogurt, unless you like frozen fruit. It gives me a brain freeze.
3. Add as much granola as you like on top.
4. Mix and enjoy.
5. Clean up your dishes and any mess you made after!
Activity #2 - Journaling
Get out a pencil and your home learning journal. Add the date to the top of the page.
Spend some time making a list of 5-10 things you are grateful for this morning.
Once you are finished that, spend some time writing about how life is going for you during this strange time. It is really helpful for us to write out our thoughts, especially when we are going through challenging situations. Share your thoughts and feelings with the paper in your journal and then leave them there and enjoy the rest of your day as best you can.
Activity #3 - Sidewalk Chalk Art
Look up some inspirational quotations online. If you can't find any, use the one from Winnie the Pooh at the top of this post.
Grab your sidewalk chalk and head out to your driveway and sidewalk. Write out the inspirational quotation(s) for others to see and decorate it. Think about what makes you smile and laugh and try to draw pictures of that. We all need some extra joy and positivity in our days. This is your chance to make a difference and make a neighbour smile!
Activity #4 - Reading
Grab your home learning journal and a pencil and head over to YouTube and watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yzY6buMflo
Pause the video to write out the parts of plot diagram. At the end, try drawing a picture of a plot diagram.
As you read for half an hour today, be thinking about the parts of plot and where you are at on a plot line with your story. If you feel ambitious, sketch a plot diagram and label it with the parts you notice in your book so far.
Activity #5 - Math
It is good for all of our brains to do some math each day, even if it is not our favourite! Head over to one of the following websites and do half an hour of practice. If you haven't learned your times tables 2 - 12, you could also practice those!
Mathopolis: https://www.mathopolis.com/
Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/math
IXL: https://ca.ixl.com/
Activity #6 - Soccer Juggling
If you need some tips, watch this video before you go outside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzZ7Ecql-sg
Grab your soccer ball, put on your runners, and go outside and practice! Remember it will take some time to get good at it!
Activity #6 - Make Lunch - Grilled Cheese
Everyone loves grilled cheese! Maybe heat up some tomato soup to go with it. If you are really ambitious, find a recipe for tomato soup online and make your own.
Here is a recipe for a grilled cheese sandwich you could make with your parents, or if they give you permission you could make it on your own!
Make sure you clean up after yourself!
Activity #7 - Juggling
You just practiced juggling with your feet, so now it is time to practice juggling with your hands! Maybe one day you could juggle with your feet and your hands at the same time. That is a life goal for later on.
Here is a video to help remind you of technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCYDZDlcO6g&t=461s
Start with bean bags or hacky sacks if you have them. Have fun!
Activity #8 - Paint an Easter Bunny
Here are a few options for creating an acrylic painting of an Easter bunny. If you don't have acrylic paint, tempera paint will work just fine. Use what you have in your house. If you don't know how to mix paint, check out the image below the painting tutorials.
Bunny option #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NDw6l3vUAw
*If you scroll to the bottom of the second option there is a step by step video.
Bunny option #3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mnqz2oehE8
Here is a picture to help you with your colour mixing:
The two colours in the background make the colour in the diamond shape. Ex. red + yellow = orange
Happy creating! Make sure you put your art up somewhere in your house to decorate for Easter!
Activity #9 - Play Chess
Find a sibling and get out a chess board. If you have never played before, here is a video to give you some instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlTEQZ5Sy4E
Hopefully you find it fun!
Activity #10 - Help Make Dinner
Remember, the job of a young person is to be the assistant chef during dinner prep and to help with clean up.
We love to go out for ethnic food with friends. Going out to eat and being with friends is currently not an option, but we can still eat ethnic food! If you need a dinner idea, try making some home made Ramen! This is the recipe I use: https://www.forkknifeswoon.com/simple-homemade-chicken-ramen/
Activity #11 - Fly a Kite
Find your favourite kite (or the one you made in earlier home learning plans) and head to an empty field with your family to fly it. Walk the long way home to get some extra exercise.
Hope you found some fun ideas for your day!
Thanks for reading.
Cheers,
Angela
