Pandemic Home Fun/Learning - Day 4

"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears."
- Nelson Mandela
Happy isolation Sunday to you all! I've just been talking with a friend of mine who works as a manager of a hospital in Vancouver Coastal Health. She has worked almost two weeks straight to care for and help others. We need people like her to be able to look after themselves so that they can look after us. Please choose to put your normal lives on hold and stay home so that we can support our friends who are caring for others.
Here are a few activities for your relaxation Sunday.

Activity #1 - Breakfast
Sundays are for relaxation. Enjoy some cereal with fruit.

Activity #2 - TED talk inspiration time
Your kids are the next generation of world changers and they are currently living through a time that is stressful and hard. Use this pandemic as a tool to inspire them to decide to be world changers in whatever way they are able to.
Below is a link to a blog with 17 TED talks for kids to inspire their young minds to do big things. I haven't watched all the videos, but I plan to in the next few days. Hopefully I can use these with my class to inspire them from a distance as well. Before showing your child, it would be a good idea to pre-screen them to make sure it is something you approve of your family watching.

Activity #3 - Clean your patio furniture
It is really important for kids to learn how to clean and participate in the running of a home. While it is still sunny in Vancouver, give them a lesson in cleaning a patio and the furniture!

Activity #4 - Badminton
This is probably my favourite backyard activity. Set up a beach badminton set and play a singles badminton tournament with your family. If you don't have one, perhaps you could order one online from Canadian Tire. They are seriously hours of fun!

Activity #5 - Lunch
Enjoy a delicious feast on your clean patio. Check your fridge for a couple lunch options then let your kids decide together on the one option out of three that you have given. If you need some ideas, here are a few:
- Tomato soup with grilled cheese
- Chicken salad with cucumber, lettuce, and red onion
- Tuna sandwich with chopped veggies

Activity #6 - Reading
Enjoy a book of your choice for at least half an hour. If you have a hammock, perhaps set it up outside for the young ones to read in the fresh air. If it is cool, bring out blankets!

Activity #7 - Art Hub for Kids
This is an idea from my teacher friend, Riley. There are SO many fun drawing, painting, sculpting, cut-out and oragami lessons. Let your kids spend some time exploring all the options and then pick a couple to make in the afternoon.
Since you have lots of time at home, why not try creating an art display board somewhere in your home if you don't have one already. This shows your kids that you value their creations and gives them an authentic audience for their work.

Activity #8 - Family Walk
Enjoy some fresh air and exercise together. Remember to stay at least two metres away from others and avoid playgrounds and visiting with friends. The better we isolate, the better chance we have to flatten the curve.

Activity #9 - Order Take Out
Our local businesses need support during this time. Perhaps check the restaurant food and inspection rating for the place you want to get food from, and if you are satisfied that they are likely following proper food preparation techniques, order some food to support them. There are a few good articles online about ordering food during a pandemic. Do your research and only do what you feel comfortable with. It is probably a good idea to take the food out of packaging and wash your hands really well after touching anything.

Activity #10 - Board Games
Decide on a board game to play together. Since you have lots of time, go for the long ones! Perhaps Monopoly, Ticket to Ride or Risk for older kids. You could also FaceTime friends in for a board game night. We are planning on playing Scattergories and Taboo with friends online tonight. It will be a fun and socially distant eve.
Hope you found some entertaining and helpful ideas in here.
Enjoy your day!
Angela
