Schools are closed and the kids are at home. Check out my ideas for Pandemic Home Learning - Day 1.
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."
- Mark Twain
Since schools are closed indefinitely in BC because of Covid-19, I thought now might be a good time to bring my blog back to life and share some ideas to keep kids learning at home. My goal is to publish one post a day with a schedule of activities to keep kids of various ages learning while they are away from school. If you want to receive emails each time I publish new content, subscribe to my mailing list by clicking the menu button or adding your email and name in the pop-up.
Pandemic Home Learning - Day 1
Activity #1 - Make Breakfast - Open Faced Egg Sandwich
Ingredients
1 piece of bread
1 egg
2 slices of cheese
Topping for your toasted bread (dijon, ketchup, chipotle mayo, salsa, etc.)
1 piece of sandwich meat, sliced ham, or a piece of bacon
Handful of washed lettuce or arugula (optional)
Fruit of your choice
1 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
1. Add 1 tbsp olive oil to frying pan and turn heat on to medium.
2. Put your piece of bread in the toaster.
3. Once the oil is hot and sizzles when you flick some water on it, add your sandwich meat to one side of the pan. If cooking bacon, let it cook for a few minutes before adding the egg. Crack your egg and let it cook on the other side of the pan.
4. Start toasting your bread.
5. Wash and peel your fruit. Put it on your plate.
6. Keep an eye on the egg and meat. Flip the meat when it is browning. Flip your egg if you like.
7. Once your toast pops up, take it out of the toaster and add the topping of your choice. Place your two slices of cheese on top.
8. Using a flipper, take your meat out of the pan and put it on top of the cheese. Add your washed lettuce or arugula to the meat.
9. Turn off the stove and scoop your egg on top of the sandwich.
10. Enjoy your delicious breakfast.
Remember to clean up after yourself and wash your dishes.
Activity #2 - Yoga
There are two options below, depending on age and ability level. Both options have a YouTube channel and app option. These can be played off an iPad, phone, or TV.

Middle School: Down Dog https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl0AUXMurZXQBA9tY6YMaWA

Activity #3 - Reading
Select a novel of your choice and read for a minimum of 30 minutes. If you don't have a novel, check out the Overdrive app and sign up with your local library card. You will have access to lots of ebooks to read on your iPad.
Once you have read for 30 minutes, watch this YouTube video on how to write a summary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi8RnDjELdc&t=29s
Find a notebook that you can use for Pandemic Home Learning and write a short summary from the pages you read so far. Create a graphic organizer like the one in the video if it helps.

Activity #4 - Typing Practice
Parents can sign students up for free typing practice on https://www.typing.com/student/signup. They can spend 15 minutes practicing typing online.

Activity #5 - Walk and Rock Collecting
Go for a walk with your family and remember to practice social distancing! As you are walking, look for rocks along they way that are large enough to paint.
Once you are home, wash your rocks and leave them somewhere to dry.
Activity #6 - Make Lunch
Here are some ideas you can do yourself.
- Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
- Crackers, cheese, hummus, and veggies
- Grilled cheese sandwich
- Ham and cheese sandwich
Remember to do your own dishes and clean up after yourself!
Activity #7 - Rock Painting
Find some paints in your house. Acrylic or tempera paints would work best. Be careful with acrylic, it will stain.
Find a safe place to paint - perhaps put a garbage bag down outside and paint in the fresh air. Decorate your rocks and take pictures to share with your family.
Once they have dried, you could use them to decorate your garden outside.

Activity #8 - Puzzle Building
Find a puzzle in your basement. The bigger, the better! You have lots of time to complete it.
Activity #9 - Help Make Dinner
That's right! Now is a great time to learn to cook. Find out what you can do to contribute to your family meal.

Activity #10 - Journal
In your Pandemic Home Learning notebook, write the date on the top of the page and spend time journaling about the day. Write about what you learned, what you enjoyed, and what was hard. One day when you are older you might enjoy looking back and reading your thoughts.
Enjoy the rest of your free time today!
