Pandemic Home Learning - Day 8

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
- Mahatma Ghandi

Activity #1 - Make Breakfast Crepes
This breakfast will probably need parent help. But it is totally worth it! Here is an easy recipe if you don't have one already:
Remember - when you make a mess in the kitchen, you also need to clean it up!

Activity #2 - Math
Log on to your IXL account and spend at least half an hour working on age appropriate math problems. If you need to see what those are, check out the BC New Curriculum here: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/mathematics
If you need some lessons on various topics, one of my favourite YouTube channels to use is Mathantics. They are entertaining to watch and really informative. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/user/mathantics

Activity #3 - Reading
Take out your home learning journal and turn to the next blank page. Write the title "Questions" at the top of the page. Watch this video about asking questions while reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2fWZHaNugc
There are two types of questions you could ask while reading. Write the two types of questions and their explanations in your home journal.
1. Quick Questions: These are questions that are answered later in the book.
2. Deep Thinking Questions: These are questions that the author intentionally does not answer. They want you to try to come up with your own answers to those questions!
Now that you've learned a bit about types of questions, make a chart with three sections. Label the sections "Before Reading," and "During Reading," and "After Reading."
Before you open your book, think back to where you left off in your story yesterday. Write down any questions you have about what you read and what is to come in your book.
As you read, make note of any questions you have in the "During Reading" column. Spend at least thirty minutes reading your book today.
Once you've finished reading, write down a few "After Reading" questions.
Try to have a variety of quick questions and deep thinking questions in all of the columns.
Enjoy your book!

Activity #4 - Badminton
Watch this video for a lesson on how to hold your racket and improve your clear motion. Sending the birdie in a rainbow is not the best once you start playing actual games. I tell my class that rainbows equal death. Basically you set your opponent up to smash the birdie back at you.
Head outside for some fresh air and exercise. Set up your badminton net and practice your new overhead clear skills.
Once you've practiced for a bit, challenge your sibling to a match. You should probably stay outside for at least half an hour.

Activity #5 - Soccer
Since you're already outside, grab your soccer ball and practice your juggling skills from yesterday.

Activity #6 - Science Experiment!
You will need some protective eye wear for this. Maybe put on your ski goggles or some sunglasses when it comes time for the explosion. :-)
Here is the link to the experiment: http://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/9727-2/
It might be a good idea to show this to your parent first and make sure they are okay with you mixing things and exploding things in your house.
Happy experimenting!

Activity #7 - Writing
Get out your journals, turn on some instrumental music, and get ready to write a story for at least half an hour.
Prompt: He opened the safe and it was gone. No one had the code, who could have opened it?
Spend 20-30 minutes minimum creating this story. Once you are finished, re-read through it and make sure there is a beginning, middle and end.
Now it is time to turn your story into a comic strip! All you need is a piece of white paper, pencil, ruler, eraser, and pencil crayons. Turn your paper so that it is landscape and make eight equally sized boxes. Use those boxes for illustrations and text.
Here is a video that might help you get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufOXBuGhVWg
Once you are finished, call someone in your family that you would like to chat with and share your comic strip with them!

Activity #8 - Lunch
Try making these delicious Ham and Cheese Sliders for lunch. https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/ham-and-cheese-sliders
They look super simple and delish! Remember to wash your hands before you start and clean up when you're done.

Activity #9 - Acrylic Painting on Canvas
This blog has a bunch of really cool paintings with traceables and instructions.
Here is the link to the gallery of options: https://stepbysteppainting.net/2018/01/02/step-by-step-canvas-painting-instructions/
Here is an ladybug painting example of instructions without a video: https://stepbysteppainting.net/2020/03/22/kids-ladybug-painting/
Have fun creating a masterpiece! This should take you a decent amount of time, so I will not post as many activities in today's plan.

Activity #10 - Build and Fly a Kite
Check out this Instructables site for materials and instructions. https://www.instructables.com/id/A-Garbage-Bag-Kite/
It is best to fly it far from electrical cables, telephone wires, and trees. Perhaps walk to your local park with your family to fly it.
Remember to stay socially distant!

Activity #11 - Help Make Dinner
If you need an idea, tonight we are having chow mein with tofu. Here is an official recipe if you would like one: https://www.recipetineats.com/chicken-chow-mein/
My recipe is not facy. I use whatever veggies we currently have in the house. Today that will include tofu, onion, broccoli, peppers, corn, brussel sprouts, and carrots. I sautee those in a wok while cooking farkay noodles in a pot. Once the noodles are finished I drain them and add them to the wok. My sauce is 6 tbsp of oyster sauce, 2 tbsp hoisin sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, and 2 tbsp soy sauce. Mix it all up and voila, you have delish chow mein.

Activity #12 - Evening Walk
Enjoy some time walking together and talking about your day. Going outside to stretch your legs feels so good!
If you come back early, you could even enjoy your favourite Netflix show together!
Hope you found some fun learning activities for your day!
Cheers!
Angela
