Pandemic Home Learning - Day 7

Spring, Tree, Flowers, Meadow, Tree Trunk, Sunlight

"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough."
- Oprah Winfrey

Good morning! I hope Oprah's quotation is encouraging to you today. Even though we are working from home and away from friends, we have so much to be grateful for. Enjoy the plans for today and have a wonderful day!

Cocktail, Breakfast, Fruit, Raspberries, Vitamins

Activity #1 - Make Breakfast

Try making yourself a smoothie today! You might already have some go-to recipes that your family loves, if you do, learn how to make your favourite smoothie. If you don't have a favourite, check out the recipes on this website: https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/tropical-fruit-smoothies

There are different varieties of smoothie depending on the fruit you have in your house. I add protein powder to my smoothie to make it a big more nutritious. If you have some, try adding it too!

Writing, Journal, Personal Diary

Activity #2 - TED talk and Journaling

Open your journal to the next blank page and write the date at the top. Spend five to ten minutes writing about what you are grateful for today.

Watch this TED talk by Jack Andraka https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-ycQufrgK4

Respond to these questions:
1. What is the one thing you want to remember from this TED talk?
2. What is inspirational about Jack?
3. After watching this, brainstorm a list of thing you could do to help change the world. If you can't think of anything, list some of your gifts and talents and write down how those gifts could be used to help others.

Crocheting, Yarn, Diy, Knitting, Hand Made, Thread

Activity #3 - Crocheting

If you have never tried crocheting, you are in for a treat! This is a super satisfying and relaxing activity that you can practice and make cool things with. You will need some wool and a crochet hook. There are all different types of wool and sizes of hooks.

Take a look at this video to learn how to crochet as a complete beginner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAxGTnVNJiE

If you have mastered holding a hook and completing simple stitches, try making an easy whale amigurumi. Here is the video to follow along: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYIfrnJB5i8

It does take some time to master the finger control of the wool, hook, and stitches, but don't give up! It is super fun and you can make some awesome things like Baby Yoda toques!

If you don't have any wool or hooks, Michaels has made it easy to buy from them during the pandemic. Order online through their app and they will send you an email when it is ready. In the email, they will include a phone number for you to call when you arrive in the parking lot. A Michaels employee will bring your order out to your trunk for you.

Fitness, Dumbbells, Training, Fitness Studio, Studio

Activity #4 - Circuit Training

Put this video up on your TV or computer, get on some exercise clothes, and work hard! Exercise is really good for our muscles, heart, and brain.

Grab a puzzle and a sibling and build it together.

Food, Panini, Bread, Sandwich, Dish, Cafe, Restaurant

Activity #6 - Make Lunch

This recipe for a Caprese Panini looks amazing! Work with your parents (if you need to) and make sandwiches for everyone. Maybe serve it with some chopped veggies.

Remember to clean up after yourself and put any leftovers in the fridge.

Desk, Notes, Notebook, Album, Write, Pen, Pencil, Issue

Activity #7 - Extreme Write

Get out your Pandemic Home Learning journal and open to the next empty page. Write the title, "Extreme Write," on the top of the page. Spend the next 20 to 30 minutes writing about the prompt below.

Prompt: Deep, deep down in the ocean as I was minding my own business...

When you finish writing this story, call up your grandparents and read it to them. Ask them if they have any suggestions to make your story more exciting.

Game Map, Isometric, Building, Map, Green, Medieval

Activity #8 - Extreme Write - Story Map Illustration

Find yourself a piece of white paper, a pencil and some pencil crayons. Create a map of all the locations from the story you wrote. Include a drawing of your character, their home, and the different locations they traveled on their adventure. Make sure you label each of the locations and colour in your finished map. Happy creating!

Football, Ball, Sport, Soccer, Round, Black, White

Activity #12 - Help Cook Dinner!

Check in with your family head chef and find out what you can do to help prepare dinner. Tonight we will be eating raclette, which is a Swiss dish that involves heating cheese and pouring it on top of potatoes, meat, and other grilled veggies.

Make sure you help clean up the dishes and cooking area after you finish eating!

Bicycle, Bike, Silhouette, Cycling, Drive, Fitness

Activity #13 - Family Bike Ride

Get some fresh air together. Take the bikes out and go for a relaxing ride around your neighbourhood since it is light later into the evening. Make sure you stay two metres away from everyone else!

When you get back, celebrate the end of a good day with an episode of your favourite family TV show.

Hope you enjoyed these ideas!

See you soon!
