Pandemic Home Learning - Day 2

Art, Artistic, Arts And Crafts, Close-Up, Creativity

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Hey everyone! I hope you are feeling positive and hopeful as we start another day being socially distant and isolated from one another. Hopefully this day plan gives your kids some safe indoor and outdoor time and a chance to bring joy and a smile to the day of people around you.

Activity #1 - Make Breakfast - Toast, Fruit, Yogurt, and Chocolate

Ingredients:
1 piece of bread
Toast topping of your choice (jam, peanut butter, marmalade, Nutella, Lindt chocolate spread, etc.)
Some chocolate
Fruit of your choice
Yogurt

Instructions:
1. Toast your bread.
2. Wash and peel your fruit. Put it on a plate with a couple pieces of chocolate. Open your yogurt and add it to your plate.
3. Take your toast out of the toaster and spread your topping.
4. Enjoy!
5. Clean up your mess and look around the kitchen to see if you need to take out any garbage or recycling to help your parents.

Activity #2 - Reading

Watch this YouTube video about making connections while reading. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wpByvesEMU
Take out your Pandemic Learning Notebook and write the title "Connections" on the top. Make three columns with the titles Text to Self, Text to Text, and Text to World. If it helps you, write out what each connection means in the column.

Spend a minimum of 30 minutes reading your novel from yesterday. As you read, think about the types of connections you have learned and write an example of each in the columns. If you love your book, read longer!

Activity #3 - Soccer

Grab a soccer ball and your sibling and head out to your backyard and play some one vs. one or pass. If the ball is flat, this is the perfect time to learn how to pump it up! Play outside for 20 to 30 minutes.

Wash your hands with soap and water for a full 20 seconds when you come back inside! :-)

Activity #4 - Writing

In my class we do these things called Extreme Writes. I provide a prompt as the first sentence and students create a story from what they are given. Usually we write for 15 to 20 minutes, but if they are loving the prompt we will go longer. I find it helpful to have instrumental Disney music playing in the background for students as they write.

Get out your notebook and write a title "Extreme Write" on the top. Write the prompt below as your first line, then set a timer for 20 minutes and start writing! Create an amazing adventure story!

Prompt: "Oh no," said the pirate, as he/she looked up from the map.
When you have finished writing for 20 minutes, watch this YouTube video about beginnings, middles and ends. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKAYXhIWcvE

Go back to your extreme write story and make sure you have included a beginning, middle and end.

Now watch this YouTube video to learn about punctuation. You might think this is easy, but there are a lot of middle school students who forget about these in their writing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdCOswMeXFQ

Grab a coloured pen. Read through your story out loud and add any missing punctuation. Once you've finished, put away your notebook. We will come back to this later.

Activity #5 - Monster Magazine Art

Head over to my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Don't judge - there isn't much on it. It takes a long time to learn graphic design and create usable material when you are already working full time in a classroom.

Download the Monster Magazine Art lesson - it is free! Also, feel free to rate it if you like it. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Angela-Fuellbrandt All of the materials and instructions are in the lesson. There are also picture samples.

You will need magazines, paper, sharpie, and a glue stick to complete this project. The final creatures look so cool! If you don't have magazines, you could use scrapbook or construction paper. The shiny paper does look cool. Improvise with whatever you have. Share pictures of your completed creations! Take pictures and post them or hang it up in your front window for people walking by to admire.

Activity #6 - Make Lunch

Here are some more ideas you could do yourself:
- Caesar salad
- Mac n Cheese
- Avocado toast

Activity #7 - Sidewalk Chalk Words of Encouragement

There are a lot of people who are worried about what is happening in the world right now. Look up some encouraging quotations online and write them on some small pieces of paper. Head outside with your sidewalk chalk and decorate the sidewalks in front of your house and your neighbours houses with inspirational quotations and joyful pictures.

Remember to stay two meter sticks away from people. It is important that we all stay socially distant to keep each other healthy.

When you have finished decorating a few sidewalks, come inside and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.

Activity #8 - Writing

Pull out your notebook with your extreme write from this morning. It is time to create an illustrated book of your story! You can design this however you like, but the idea is to make a version that you can share with others. Type it on the computer and leave space for your own illustrations, or write it out by hand and add illustrations. It should be at least 6-8 pages. Use half the page for text and half for pictures.

Once you have finished writing and illustrating your story, facetime your grandparents and read it to them! They would love to hear from you and be entertained by your story.

Activity #9 - Bake Banana Bread
This will be breakfast tomorrow morning! Work with an older sibling or wait until your parent is finished working and make this together. Most people have a go-to banana bread recipe. Hopefully you have some old bananas in your freezer. If you don't, next time you have some bananas turning too brown to eat, put them in your freezer to save for a day like today.

Here is a banana bread recipe that is highly rated if you don't have one. Also, I usually skip the nuts and add chocolate chips. Happy baking!

Activity #10 - Journal

Just like yesterday, write today's date at the top of your notebook and spend some time writing about your favourite things, things you learned, and what challenged you today. It is good for us to all spend time alone with our thoughts.

Hopefully you had fun learning some new things today!

See you tomorrow.

Angela
