More fun ideas for Home Learning - Day 13
"There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind."
- C.S Lewis
Hey everyone! Happy Thursday! Hope you are figuring out a schedule that works for you and your family as you navigate this school and work at home quarantine time.
Activity #1 - Make Breakfast - Smoothies!
Get out your favourite ingredients for your favourite smoothie! If you don't have one that you make often, try out one from this link: https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/mixed-berry-smoothies
Clean up and wash your dishes when you're finished!
Activity #2 - Journal - Focus on Gratitude
Watch this video about gratitude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPPPFqsECz0
Open your journal to the next empty page and write the date and title "Gratitude" on the top of the page.
Answer these questions in your journal:
1. What are some of the benefits of being grateful?
2. What are some practices that can help us improve our gratitude?
3. What will you do to practice gratitude today when you go about your daily life?
Before you get on with your day, spend time writing about all the things (5-10) you are grateful for right now.
Activity #3 - Math
Head to your favourite math site to learn and practice something new! Try out one of the options below.
IXL: https://ca.ixl.com/
Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/math
Mathopolis: https://www.mathopolis.com/
Activity #4 - Reading - Theme
Get out your home learning journal and a pencil. Write the title "Theme" on the next blank page.
BrainPop is one of my favourite websites to use with my students if I need to teach them something quick. You have to pay for a subscription normally, but today I found a great video on YouTube from BrainPop! Yay! I hope you like learning about theme with this Star Wars BrainPop.
Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RecVd-6g-IY
It is a good idea to write out the definition of theme and a few examples in your notebook.
Once you've finished the video, see if you can think of a few themes from the story you are currently reading. If you aren't sure what the theme is, spend some time reading while thinking about theme and see if you can figure some out.
Enjoy reading your book and looking for theme!
Activity #5 - Slack Line
Head outside and set up your slack line. It takes a long time to be able to walk across one of these. Don't give up if you keep falling off!
Activity #6 - Build a Bird House
This is a great way to use items from your recycling bin. Check out this video for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3M67SomfsU
If you are older and have access to wood, a saw, and some sand paper, you could attempt to find a video and make a bird house out of wood. Otherwise, use a milk carton and whatever fantastic decorations you have hanging around your house! Maybe spruce it up with some scrapbooking paper, ribbon, washy tape and sequins. You decide! Have fun!
Activity #7 - Make Lunch - Pasta with Butter and Parmesan Cheese
Put on your aprons and chef hats and test out this amazing looking recipe: https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/best-ever-pasta-with-butter-and-parmesan-cheese
Activity #8 - Create a Board Game on your Driveway
There once was a super fun board game called snakes and ladders. Why not use sidewalk chalk and create a giant size board game to play on your driveway?
Here are the rules of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-kTZF2EEKc
Pause the video on a picture of the game board. Take a screen shot of the game board so you have it outside with you while you're drawing.
Once you've finished the video, get your chalk, head outside, and draw the board game in giant size on your driveway. Get your family to come play with you! If you don't have a giant die, you could make one out of paper.
Activity #9 - Toilet Paper Challenge
Some people online are doing amazing things with toilet paper. Check out some of these videos:
What can you do?? Make a video and share it with your family and friends!
Activity #10 - Writing
Get out your home learning journal and start by watching this video on how to organize your writing in paragraphs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hsPNjEMOJ0
Your turn to practice! Use the prompt below and create an exciting story. As you write, be thinking about what you learned and use paragraphs in your writing.
Prompt: The bell rang and I sprinted towards my locker. I had to get out of there before...
When you're finished your story, phone a friend or two and read it to them!
Activity #11 - Help Cook Dinner
Grab your apron again and be ready to assist with chef duties in the kitchen.
If your mom needs a gift anytime soon, this is one of my favourite cookbooks: https://www.amazon.ca/Magnolia-Table-Collection-Recipes-Gathering/dp/006282015X
Tonight we are having quiche from the the Magnolia Table cookbook. Unfortunately, it isn't on the Magnolia blog so I can't link it. The recipe I liked below has bacon in it so it must be good! You could try it out if you don't have your own recipe.
Activity #12 - Go Outside
It is good for all of us to get some fresh air. Head outside with your family and enjoy some time exercising together. Perhaps walk, roller blade, bike, or even do some yard work. If you have a fire pit, maybe you could roast marsh mellows later in the eve!
Have a great rest of your day!
Hope you found some fun activities in here.
Cheers,
Angela
