It's the first day of extended Spring Break! Here are some ideas to keep your kids busy. Home Learning - Day 10
"Happiness isn't something that depends on our surroundings...it's something we make inside ourselves."
- Corrie Ten Boom
Hello friends! I hope you had a fun and rejuvenating weekend of isolation with your families.
Activity #1 - Make Breakfast - Avocado Toast
This is one of my favourite breakfasts - avocado toast! It is really easy to make. Here is a recipe that you can use to try making some for yourself: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/avocado-toasts-3364588
I like to make mine a bit more fancy and add a sunny side up, runny yolk egg on top. It's so good!
Remember to wash your avocado and clean up the kitchen when you are finished.
Activity #2 - Journaling - Character and Leadership Focus
Get out your home learning journal and a pencil. Find a device to stream a half hour long YouTube video.
Many years ago there was a famous explorer named Sir Ernest Shackleton. He took a crew of men on an expedition to Antarctica in a boat named the Endurance. As they were sailing through some ice, their boat became trapped and would not move forward or backward. This video tells the story of their expedition and has some really great lessons that we can apply to our lives.
Survival! The Shackleton Story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgh_77TtX5I
Now that you've watched the video, respond to the questions below.
1. What was the relationship like between Shackleton and his men?
2. How did Shackleton keep the spirits of his men up when there was little chance for survival?
3. When you are in a hard situation at home or school, how do you usually respond? Do you give up or try to find a solution? How do you work through a hard situation?
4. What is inspiring about Shackleton's leadership of his men?
5. All of us lead someone in some way. Teachers lead students, parents lead kids. Who do you lead? How do you want those you lead to view you as a leader?
6. What is the most important lesson you have learned from this video?
7. How will the lesson you learned influence the rest of your day today?
Activity #3 - Yoga
Head to your favourite online yoga app or YouTube channel and spend at least 20 minutes in a flow.

*I just noticed they have Minecraft yoga and Harry Potter yoga on cosmic kids. So cool!

*I'm going to try some of these out. They have a variety of types of flows for back pain, toning, and weight loss.
Activity #4 - Rap a Kids Story
A friend of mine sent me this amazing link of a Dr. Seuss story being rapped. https://vimeo.com/401550036
Now that you've watched it and are inspired, choose your own favourite story and find some instrumental rap music on Apple Music or Spotify. Practice rapping the book a few times and then record yourself. Send it to your younger siblings or cousins. Maybe send it to your grandparents! You could also share it with your teacher. They would LOVE it.
Activity #5 - Khan Academy Math
Head over to Khan Academy and find some math to work on. You could probably spend 30 to 45 minutes on this. Here is the link: https://www.khanacademy.org/math
Find your grade on the home page and look through the list of concepts you could learn. Pick something that you don't know about and go through the lesson. Once you've watched a video or two, there will be some multiple choice practice questions you can do to practice what you've learned.
Activity #6 - Design Transportation for your Pet
I recently saw a post online of a person who built an army tank out of boxes for it's cat to drive. It was amazing.
Find some old boxes, choose your favourite type of transportation, and create a sweet ride for your pet. Make sure you take a picture of your pet riding in your finished project.
Activity #7 - Make Lunch - Veggie Wrap with Hummus
Time to make some delicious food! Try out this recipe if you need some inspiration. https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/veggie-wrap-with-hummus
Remember to wash your hands and vegetables and clean up when you're finished!
Activity #8 - Skipping
After lunch, find a skipping rope and head outside to get some fresh air and exercise! See how many forward skips and backward skips you can do in a row. If that is easy for you, practice some of these tricks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUCQ2pvnyW4
Activity #9 - Play Hopscotch
Get out your sidewalk chalk and go create your own hopscotch on your driveway or anywhere else you have cement and can write with chalk. You will also need a bottle cap or a small rock.
Here is a video to show you the rules: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZzswQaICfM
Activity #10 - Write a Screenplay
Did you know that all the movies you watch are originally written as books or screenplays? Now is your chance to try writing a play for others to act out!
Watch this video to learn about screenplays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TARsoxST0tQ
Get out some paper or open your laptop to Microsoft Word. Start writing out your first attempt at a screen play. Writing this should take you a while - at least an hour, much more if you want to make it long an detailed.
Once you've finished a draft, have your sister or brother read it over and give you tips on how to make it more exciting or make more sense. Make sure there is a beginning, middle and end. There should also be some conflict.
Once you're happy with your draft, print out a few copies and share it with your cast (brother(s)/sister(s)). Then make some costumes and practice! You could do a live performance for your parents after dinner or record it and share it with family and friends.
Activity #11 - Crochet
Last week you started learning how to crochet. Grab some wool and take a look through this video to find a project to try today. All the links for the instructions are in the description below the video. The monsters look super cute!
Activity #12 - Colouring and Audiobooking
You've worked hard today! Take a break, get out your pencil crayons and colouring book, and listen to an audiobook as you colour.
Activity #13 - Help Make Dinner
If your BBQ has already been cleaned for the spring/summer season, head outside for a lesson on how to turn on the grill and help cook up some bratwurst!
Remember to help clean up after dinner!
Activity #14 - Family Game Night - Jackbox Games
We recently learned about a fun game called Drawful 2 on Jackbox. You can download the app on your Apple TV, then open it on the TV. Each of your family members need their own device to play with; an iPad or phone or touch screen laptop would work. You each create your own profile and have a fun drawing and guessing competition. It is really fun! I think Drawful 2 is free right now because of COVID-19. Set it up on your TV and spend some quality time playing this game together!
Hope this gave you some fun ideas for the day!
Cheers,
Angela
