There are so many exciting new ideas inside! Get ready for Home Learning - Day 11
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
- Winston Churchill
Hey everyone! Hope your Monday with kids at home and you attempting to work went well. Here are some new ideas for this so far sunny day!
Activity #1 - Make Breakfast - Oatmeal
We haven't learned how to make oatmeal yet. Scroll down this blog https://fitfoodiefinds.com/the-50-best-oatmeal-recipes-on-the-planet/ until you come to the recipe and try it out. The recipe is banana and cinnamon flavoured. You can always change up the fruit so that it is something you like or something you have available in your house.
Happy cooking and cleaning!
Activity #2 - Journal - Focus on Your Quarantine Life
Watch this YouTube video about Anne Frank. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ond6r5pafjw
Anne Frank's diary helps us better understand the life of a Jewish family during World War II. Right now you are living in a time of a global pandemic. One day, your experiences and thoughts may be wanted by people so that they can understand what we have lived through.
Spend some time writing about your experiences doing daily life this week. What is it like when you go for a walk? How do you keep in contact with your family? How do you get groceries? What happens when you bring your groceries home? Do you have any extra cleaning you need to do because of COVID-19? What is the best thing about living in isolation? What is the worst thing about all of this? What is the greatest lesson you have learned so far in this pandemic?
Spend a good 20-30 minutes writing about this.
Activity #3 - Math!
Head to Khan Academy, find your grade level, and find a new concept to learn about! Enjoy the videos and then practice your skills with their review questions. https://www.khanacademy.org/math
Activity #4 - Create a Disney Ride
Watch a few YouTube videos of your favourite ride at Disneyland. Choose one that you could create and act out in your house.
Some Disney Ride Links:
Pirates of the Caribbean - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N22D8BpCrE8
The Little Mermaid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKipgkOdYIc
Alice in Wonderland - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXgj7_8nqVc
Here is an example of what one family has done during the pandemic for fun: https://www.delish.com/food-news/a31901436/disney-pirates-of-the-carribean-ride-family-at-home/
Create costumes for your family and assign roles. Use what you have at home and be creative! Record your ride and share it with family and friends!
Activity #5 - Play Catch
Grab your favourite ball and a sibling and head outside to play catch.
Some ideas:
- Volleyball (pass and set)
- Soccer
- Basketball (chest and bounce pass)
- Baseball (make sure you have gloves)
- Frisbee
You should spend about 15-20 minutes on this at least!
Activity #6 - Juggling
Watch this video to get some tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCYDZDlcO6g
Find some objects around your house to learn with. Look for things like hackie sacks, bean bags, etc. Tennis balls are apparently too bouncy.
You will drop the balls while you learn - that is totally good! Eventually you will catch more than you drop. We all need to be willing to fail before we get good at something.
Activity #7 - Make Lunch
Make sure your parents are good with you cooking lunch. Try making some delicious nachos for lunch! Here is a recipe: https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/nachos
Remember to clean up after yourself!
Activity #8 - Reading
Last week we learned about three important concepts to do while reading: making connections, visualizing, and asking questions while reading.
Today you will learn about making inferences.
Here is a secret: No author will ever tell you everything in a book. They want you to ask questions and try coming up with your own answers so that you are more invested in their story.
Get out your home learning journal, head to the next blank page, and write the title "Inferences" along the top.
Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_hbzv2EacM
Once you are finished the video, answer these questions.
1. What is an inference? (if you forget, watch from 1:20-2:00)
2. What is an example of an inference from the video?
3. How do you make an inference?
As you read, practice making inferences. You can do this by writing down questions you have and then attempting to answer them by making an inference.
Happy reading!
Activity #9 - Baking for your Dad
Last week we made paper flowers for your mom. Today, you can make some apple crisp for your dad!
Consider this your science for the day. Baking chemistry. Here is a recipe from my favourite kids recipe page! Enjoy! https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/apple-crisp
Activity #10 - Craft Plant Pots from Recycled Material
This is a great way to re-purpose items from your recycling bin. Watch this video to get some ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIBm_d0o8ns
Once you've made some pots, add potting soil and plant some seeds!
Activity #11 - Make a Puzzle
This is such a cool idea! You will need to find a puzzle that you don't want to build anymore and paint over it.
Here is a video explaining one way to make your own puzzle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2EMmNwTTTo
It is usually a good idea to make a draft before starting a project with paint. Plan what you want to do and then go create!
Activity #12 - Help Make Dinner
If you need an idea, how about Tuna Linguine? The recipe I love is from the Looneyspoons Cookbook. It has an creamy garlic and Parmesan sauce with the pasta. This recipe is similar, it just has a different sauce. I might try it out and see if it is better. https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/linguine-with-tuna-garlic-and-olive-oil
Activity #13 - Family Bike Ride
Enjoy some time outside together. Remember to stay at least two metres away from people!
Hope this gave you some fun ideas for the day.
Cheers!
Angela
