First day back at work so the post is a bit late...Pandemic Home Learning - Day 5
"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."
- Edward Everett Hale
Happy Monday everyone! Today was my first day working after spring break, (we have ours on a different schedule) so I didn't have a chance to post any new activities this morning. I'm going to need to figure out when the best time is for me to write ideas to share with you all. This plan will likely be best used tomorrow.
Activity #1 - Make Breakfast
Let's keep today simple. Make yourself some toast with your favourite topping, have some fruit, and a yogurt.
Toast topping ideas: peanut butter, jam, Nutella, Lindt chocolate spread, marmalade
Activity #2 - IXL Math
IXL is a great online resource that families can use to help their kids learn and practice math. Take a look at their website and if you are interested, sign up! Here is the website: https://ca.ixl.com/
It might be a good idea for parents to compare what is offered on IXL for your child's grade and with the content that is required from the BC Ministry of Education. Here is the link: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/mathematics
Once you're signed up and ready to learn, spend 30 to 45 minutes doing some grade appropriate math.
Activity #3 - Seven Minute Workout
Download the Seven Minute Workout app on a phone or iPad and complete a full body workout. I use this with my class and it is a great way to build strength and turn on your prefrontal cortex. This part of your brain is important when you are learning.
Activity #4 - Writing
Take out your Pandemic Home Learning notebook and get ready to write for 20 to 30 minutes on the topic below. Remember to pay attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation as you write.
Prompt: Imagine you were given the gift of a large piece of land and an inheritance that would build the house of your dreams. Describe your dream house in detail.
Finished writing? Watch this YouTube video on revising and editing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLpKgeLgFEg
Now it is your turn! Go back to your written piece and use your ARMS and CUPS to make your work better. It is best to use a different colour pen when you are revising and editing.
Once you have finished editing, type up your story in Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Activity #5 - Ping Pong Tournament
This is something that every family should purchase for hours of fun. You can purchase indoor/outdoor table tennis sets that attach onto your tables or kitchen islands to turn them into a ping pong table. Here is an example: https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5040-855/Backpack-Table-Tennis-Set?colour=NOC02&gclid=CjwKCAjwvOHzBRBoEiwA48i6AreUaCuBGIT_lDlS-TtVmTTJSiPMKb-I01nayGFER9vZ1MtGVTvLMBoCd7kQAvD_BwE
Set this up in your house and create a ping pong tournament bracket for your family. This is a great way for all of you to take a break from working and get some physical activity into your day.
Activity #6 - LEGO
Remember that house you wrote about before playing ping pong? Well now is your chance to design it with your LEGO. Have fun designing and building what you described. When you are finished, you could take a picture of it and share the picture and written description with your grandparents and other family members who might like to hear from you.
Activity #7 - Reading
Before reading today, watch this YouTube video on Visualization. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVjTuJ7wQFI
Grab your home learning journal and write the word "Visualization" on the top of your next blank page. Keep this book next to you as you enjoy your novel and sketch a drawing of the strongest visualization you get while you are reading.
Reading is always better with your favourite drink - make some tea or a smoothie to enjoy while you read!
Activity #8 - Oragami
Head over to Art for Kids Hub and find a new origami creation to try. Here is the link: https://www.artforkidshub.com/origami/
Activity #9 - Help Make Dinner!
I hope you are enjoying being an assistant chef in the kitchen. This will be so helpful for you once you've grown up and moved out. It is much healthier for all of us to eat home cooked food instead of ordering take out all the time. If you need some dinner ideas, tonight we are having Spicy Peanut Sesame Noodle Bowl.
Activity #10 - Prep Breakfast for Tomorrow
Try making overnight oats for breakfast tomorrow. Here is a link to some kid-friendly recipes that you might like. https://tasty.co/compilation/kid-friendly-overnight-oats-4-ways
Activity #11 - Journal
Spend 10 minutes writing in your journal about the day. Definitely make a list of what you are thankful for and also include what you enjoyed and want to remember.
Hope that gave you some helpful ideas!
Have a great day.

Recipe for spicy peanut noodle bowl??
ReplyDeleteThe recipe I use is from the Yum and Yummer cookbook. I make it spicy by adding crushed pepper flakes, extra hot sauce, and sometimes a jalapeno pepper. https://yumyummer.com/peanutty-sesame-noodle-bowl/ It doesn't have measurements, but all the ingredients are included in the video. I highly recommend the cook book - there are so many good recipes inside!
