Fantastic Friday - Pandemic Home Learning - Day 9
"And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow."
- Gilbert K. Chesterton
Happy Friday! Hope you are all doing well on this last day of the work week. According to my weather app, when you read this it will probably be raining. Hopefully you find some time to go outside and enjoy the rain with your family. Perhaps walk through (or jump in) a puddle or two. I love rain. It makes me feel calm and relaxed - especially after I go for a run in it and come back to a warm and dry home. Thanks for reading my ideas below!
Activity #1 - Pimento, Cheese and Ham Scramble with Toast
Learn how to make some delicious scrambled eggs today. Here is a simple recipe you could try: https://www.womansday.com/food-recipes/food-drinks/recipes/a13142/pimiento-cheese-ham-scramble-recipe-wdy0514/
I would probably substitute a regular red pepper in place of the roasted red pepper.
Toast up some bread and have some fruit with it. Remember to clean up after yourself.
Activity #2 - Make your Mom Flowers
Challenge your crafting abilities by making your mom a bouquet of roses! Right now she is likely working, trying to help you learn, and running a home, all during a global pandemic. That is a lot of work! Show her some appreciation that doesn't require you to leave your house. All you need is this YouTube video, some party streamers, white glue, scissors, and a few take out chopsticks. In the video it says to use BBQ skewers. Use whatever you have more of.
Activity #3 - Create a Flower Arrangement
Now that you've made a bunch of flowers for your mom, you need to create a vase for them. Mason jars are very popular home decorations. If you don't have any of those that you can decorate, check your recycling bin for some pasta sauce jars. The Classico jars are really pretty. You will just have to take the label off.
You could go outside and find a bunch of rocks, clean them, and then put them in the bottom of your jar too if you want. That can sometimes look nice. It depends on your jar design though.
There are tons of decorative mason jar ideas all over the internet. Pinterest is a great place to start. Here are a few blogs to give you some inspiration.
Happy crafting!
Activity #4 - Rainbow in a Glass
Time for some science! Make sure your parents don't mind you playing with sugar, water, glasses, and food colouring.
Take a read through this online experiment and test it out for yourself! Take pictures or make a video to share what you did with some family members. Ask them if they know why the colours don't mix.
Remember to clean up your experiment when you are finished.
Activity #5 - Make Lunch
You made a fancy breakfast this morning. Why not have a peanut butter and jam sandwich for lunch today. Simple and delish! It is even better if you have whole wheat or whole grain bread with all the crusts attached. Enjoy!
Activity #6 - Reading
Today is reading for fun day. Make some hot chocolate or tea and find a comfy place to escape into another world of your choice. It is probably good to read for at least half an hour.
Activity #7 - Circuit Training with Maurice - Part 2
Get your computers, iPads, or apple TVs ready with this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc1Ag9m7XQo
Work hard! This helps your heart, muscles, and brain! You might want to have a water bottle handy. This is a long one!
Activity #8 - Slack Line
Put on your rain clothes and runners and head outside to set up your slack line. Spend some time practicing your new skills. Remember - it takes a long time to develop your balance on these! Don't give up.
Activity #9 - Write a Thank You Card/Letter
Write a thank you card or letter to the doctors and nurses at your local hospital. They are working really hard to help people who are very sick and risking their own health at the same time.
Once you've written your card, look up the name and address of the hospital and write it on the front of your envelope.
If you don't know how to address a letter for the mail, check out this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=42&v=AyfAKNpgTiE&feature=emb_logo
Since we live in Canada, you will write the province where it says state, and postal code where it says zip code.
When you go to mail your letter, make sure you bring some hand sanitizer. After you have put it in the mailbox, sanitize your hands. Once you get home, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
Activity #10 - Make Cookies!
Baking is like science - if you want to find out more about why this is, check out this article: https://www.pepper.ph/science-baking/
Now that you've learned why it is like science, let's make some cookies! If you have another recipe you want to make, go for it.
If not, try this one! https://www.americastestkitchen.com/kids/recipes/after-school-peanut-butter-cookies
Activity #11 - Build a LEGO Volcano
Test out your LEGO design and instruction following. If a small LEGO volcano works, try making a larger one!
This could get messy. Make sure your parents don't mind you working in the kitchen and clean up after yourself!
Activity #12 - Help Cook Dinner
Find out what you can do to contribute to cooking dinner tonight. If you need an idea, we are having fried rice with some pork sausage. I think I'm missing the Nepali food I was eating before coming home to a pandemic and living in isolation.
Here is a recipe that is similar to what I will make: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/79543/fried-rice-restaurant-style/
Remember to help clean up after dinner!
Activity #13 - Family Board Games
Make some snacks, grab your favourite drinks, and spend the night playing your favourite board games as a family.
Hope you found some fun ideas for your day!
Cheers!
Angela
